The other weekend when their neighborhood was flagged with "extreme fire weather," my parents came over to Alameda to spend the night with us. In the morning, my mom diligently took out her crate of postcards and letters to continue writing to voters across the country and expats overseas from our kitchen table.
It's also become an activity she shares with her grandkids β when it's time to deliver each tranche, they all go to the South Shore post office together and insert envelope after envelope into the mailbox...
I know many people putting in similar efforts from their homes and cafes. Thank you to everyone who's been volunteering in ways big and small for the Harris/Walz campaign.
Still looking for a way to be involved? Have some time over the next few days?
Here are some concrete ways to assist:
- this Sunday morning join a campaign bus leaving Oakland to go spend a day knocking on potential voters' doors in Reno
- pick any day between now and Election Day and drive to Minden, Nevada, (population 3,140) for as many or as few canvassing shifts as you'd like with that campaign field office
- get a short non-stop flight from OAK to Las Vegas or Phoenix, where campaign field offices are also recruiting volunteers to canvass

The campaign is also all set up for remote volunteers to call potential voters from the "comfort" of their own homes: https://go.kamalaharris.com/calls/?us_state=ca
One thing I do take some comfort in: I recently received an email about these volunteer opportunities from a Harris/Walz campaign staffer who I had volunteered with in Mountain View during the Obama 2012 campaign. They've been digging deep into their lists and memories to "re-activate" as many volunteers as possible β a welcome contrast with the 2016 campaign, and a positive sign for the amount of energy this time around.
